    Description

We've decided in the last page editor review to investigate on replacing the "Add" button on area bars with placeholders. Such component placeholders have both a location and a size and visually represent the future space the next component added to the said area will occupy. Similarly, area placeholders can be used to give represent empty areas and optional areas, the latter of which have to be created first.

I've created a PDF prototype to explore how this could work. The prototype uses the home page of the STK demo project and shows, how the main content area in the middle is filled with teasers containing link lists, shows how navigation works and how the optional Stage area is created by using placeholders.

In this study, the placeholders are complemented by invitations, text or icons encouraging the user to click on a link or area. The idea is to visually design placeholder plus invitations such that they are easily recognized by just glancing at any page where they appear.

The PDF prototype is attached to this issue and is actually composed of a series of PDF pages linked together. The elements you can click on are emphasized using a red overlay - you can thus click on anything that is colored slightly red. I've also added notes to the left of the screens, where interesting things happen and to point out a number of interesting elements you're supposed to notice.
