There are 2 optional areas in STK: Stage and opener. I tried with both and same result.

First be sure that no "stage" or "opener" node are present in your content.
And then render a page.
You will observe that only the page bar and the MetaNavigation bar are displayed.

When you set stage to no-optional, you see more bars but all bars after opener are not displayed.
