      during the poc phase for Magnolia 5, we created a module that provided all necessary plumbing to expose REST services from within Magnolia. This could easily be extracted (and made compatible with 4.x), so that any module could expose arbitrary REST services in Magnolia (configured via AdminCentral etc)
