In the RichTextEditor one cannot add external links.
Internal links work fine.
Trying to add an external link fails.
If clicking a few times on to the link, there is a high change to "crash" the browser. The browser may tell you _ ... a script is slowing your browser. Wait or stop? ..._
Workaround: Set source: true in the Rich text field definition and add the external link in source edit mode (<a href="http://www.magnolia-cms.com">Magnolia</a>)
