Description
For every list or tree, we have a configurable default sort column and sort direction. Usually, it's the modification date and sorted from newest to oldest. If you open a list or tree, that sort order is indicated by the sort arrow in the header of the column corresponding to that default sort order. If you change the sort direction, the arrow changes to point upward to show the change.
But once you choose an entirely different sort order by clicking on a different column header - let's say the page title in the Pages app -, that column should then feature a light gray background in addition to getting the arrow. The gray background acts as an additional indicator of a non-default sort order and especially helps if you return to an app or view after some time.
From then on, the light gray background sticks until the view is reset (presumably if you close the app), even if the user picks the sort column which also happens to be the default sort column.
The color is color #04 according to the style guide (which shows this for the messages list of Pulse): http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/UX/Style+guides+for+the+Magnolia+shell#StyleguidesfortheMagnoliashell-Messageslistandgenerallistofitems
