Description
(Taken From User Experience cell log)
- How this view works
- The view on the left allows to drill-down and -up a hierarchy of categories. It filters a list of products shown in the right view.
- It seems you can only work with products, but not categories.
- There's also a chooser UI that allows to e.g. pick a product to show in a teaser on a page.
- Our feedback (summarized by Andreas)
- Choice of interaction pattern
- There was some discussion as to whether this is a good way to drill down the hierarchy of categories.
A tree or Miller columns could be alternatives; a tree would be a bad choice, if products can be in more than one category, however.
In the end, there was some agreement that this represents a quick and space-saving way to navigate and filter your list of products. - It's nice to finally see a new view type being realized.
- There was some discussion as to whether this is a good way to drill down the hierarchy of categories.
- Behavior
- Since you seem to be only able to work with products, you shouldn't be able to select a category.
- It's actually confusing that the action bar doesn't react to the selection of a category: it keeps on saying "Product" and shows a list of actions only available for products; it merely disables those actions.
- Since you can't select categories, consider supporting just a single click to drill-down and -up the hierarchy of categories.
- A double-click is less discoverable here and actually less intuitive on tablets as well.
- Since you seem to be only able to work with products, you shouldn't be able to select a category.
- Visual appearance
- Since the left side filters the right side, the two sub views actually relate to each other and are not disconnected, but the wide, gray bar in the middle suggests otherwise: it separates the two views quite strongly. Consider moving both sub views closer to each other, maybe even visually connect them.
- Because this is a new view (and not a function of an existing view), consider using a different icon for this view. However, there may be no icon in the current icon set that fits well.
- If you need guidance on the above, we could have a look at this with the visual designers starting next Tuesday.

Andreas' notes:
1. You could try experimenting with a reduced row height and then no line between the rows in the left, filter view for the categories.
That gives the left view less significance and more height to show categories, which, in turn, elevates the importance of the right view that actually shows the content you work with. However, finding a good row height can be visually challenging. Try playing with different values or ask me for help. Actually, I'm working with the visual designers on defining these type of views soon, but not before 2, 3 weeks.
2. Consider pre-selecting the first product once you drill down into a category. This allows to use the keyboard to browse products immediately.
3. I think I didn't pay much attention what you show when you double-click an item. Did you open a read-only view? If so, why?
