 Description

Chinese developers do a quick (1 hour) review of a sample from the first batch of Chinese translations of the Magnolia 5 documentation and put comments under this issue.

Note: all of the work below has been done by Chunhua Liu and Peili Liang.

Chinese translation of Magnolia 5 documentation:
http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=75860036

English Magnolia 5 documentation being translated:

Similar quick review of the first batch of Chinese UI translations:

Disclaimer:
As agreed, this was just a quick sanity check (around one hour) to make sure there were no obvious mistakes. Passing this review should not be taken to mean that the translation has been thoroughly or comprehensively reviewed in any way.

The following comments refer to the translation of My first content app:
Original English - http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/display/DOCS/My+first+content+app#Myfirstcontentapp-Createanactionbar
Chinese translation - http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=75860050

The translation for "form", 表格, is used in software to indicate a spreadsheet or a table and not a form. The proper term for "form" as in a web form is 表单.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "field", 域, is a literal translation that actually means something like a "region" or "domain". In software, it actually is used to indicate "domain" as in a web domain. The proper term for "field" as in a form field is 字段.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "Add Save and Cancel buttons to the editor", 添加保存和取消按钮到编辑器, is a literal translation of the English that is difficult to understand in Chinese and may have multiple interpretations. A more straighforward less ambiguous translation would be 在编辑器里添加 "保存" 和 "取消" 按钮.

The following comments refer to the translation of Developing an app:
Original English - http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/display/DOCS/Developing+an+app
Chinese translation - http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=75860056

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "dependency" as in "Implementing an app class and injecting a dependency on AppContext", 附属, is not used in software to mean "dependency". Rather, the right term in Chinese for dependency is 依赖.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "argument" as in "To do this programmatically you can trigger a LocationChange event by calling LocationController.goTo(...) with the location as an argument", 向量, means a vector in math/physics. The correct term for "argument" used in software is 参数.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "interface" as in "Create a class that implements the SubApp interface", 界面, is used to mean user interface. The correct term for a programming interface is 接口.

The following comments refer to the translation of Introduction to templating:
Original English - http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/display/DOCS/Introduction+to+templating
Chinese translation - http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=75860042

We believe that the translation for "creating your first page template", 建造您的首页模板, literally translates "first page" as a single unit 首页 which means "root page" or is commonly understood as the "table of contents". A translation that correctly matches the original English is 创建您的第一个页面模板.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "Assigning the page template to a page", 为页面分配模板, is a shortened translation that means "Assigning the template to a page." We believe that the full translation, 为页面分配页面模板, is actually necessary because there are several kinds of templates.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

We believe that the translation for "Assigning a page title", 赋予页面标题, is a very uncommon way of expressing "assign" and that a much more common way often found in software documentation is 指定页面标题.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "structure", 架构, as in "Structure is crucial for presenting content", has a very specific meaning in software which means a programming framework such as Vaadin. This is very misleading here. We believe that a better term to use here would be 结构.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation for "however," 然后, as in "However, it can contain almost anything: text and a related image, list of links, teased content from another page and so on", does not mean "however" but rather "then" as in "after this step, then do this step." Some correct translations of "however" would be 但是 or 然而.

We believe that the translation for “This tutorial relies on the basic templating framework included in all versions of Magnolia CMS”, 本教程基于所有版本的Magnolia CMS都含有的基本模板框架基础上, is not correct Chinese and is hard to understand. We believe that a more straightforward translation would be 在本教程中,所有的Magnolia CMS版本都依赖于这个基本的模板框架.

[Yuan]
Both translations are correct with the original English. The only difference is which part of the original sentence is emphasised. Considering the context, I think this sentence here wants to emphasise the "This tutorial relies on the basic templating framework" part, because the sentence follows it is "There is also a better alternative...". The original Chinese sentence may be hard to understand because of its complex structure, so it can be rephrased as "This tutorial relies on the basic templating framework. This framework is included in all versions of Magnolia CMS. (本教程依赖于基本的模板框架,所有Magnolia CMS都含有这个框架。)", instead of translating "In this tutorial, all Magnolia CMS rely on this basic templating framework.(在本教程中,所有的Magnolia CMS版本都依赖于这个基本的模板框架.)" which emphasises the latter half of the original English sentence.

[CHENG]
We believe you can use either as they mean the same thing. Only the original is incorrect.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The standard translation of "web application" is "Web应用程序" and never "网络应用程序".

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation of "Create a new text file helloWorld.ftl", 创建一个名为helloWorld.ftl的txt文件, because this is not the common way to describe creating a text file. We believe that a more straightforward translation would be "创建一个文本文件:helloWorld.ftl".

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The standard translation of "inherit" as in "Otherwise the area will inherit the page's renderType" is 继承 and never 沿用.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The standard translation of "by default" in software documentation is "默认的情况下" and not "缺省情况下".

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

A computer "map" as in "Properties are exposed as a map" cannot be translated as 地图, which is the literal translation for a street map. This term is not usually translated, and "map" should still be used.

[Yuan]
Non-translating is not a good option. I'll search online Chinese documents to see if there is an existing translation. Meanwhile, can "map" be translated as "映射(mapping, reflection)"?

[CHENG]
"map" is used much more frequently among developers than "映射". You can use "映射", but we believe "map" will actually be much easier to understand by your target audience.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation of "common field properties", 域的通用属性, doesn't make any sense in Chinese. A straightforward translation would be 公共的字段属性.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

The translation of "two new tags", 两对新的标签, adds meaning by quantifying each tag using 对 which means "pair". However, tags in Chinese are never quantified using 对 which can be confusing, and this sentence should simply be 两个新的标签.

Comment by Cheng Hu [ 25/Nov/13 ]

"Until now" should be translated '到目前为止' but not ‘到目前位置’. The latter has no meaning in Chinese.
