It would be cool to have a couple of keyboard shortcuts. I would appreciate a shortcut to quickly change from edit to preview mode and back. For longer pages that would save me from a lot of scrolling up and down. Of course the killer would be if re-rendering is pure client side (all admin-only stuff is removed/added on the client) ESC-key would fit for the preview and back functionality |

With the new Page Editing of Magnolia 4.5 this long requested and overdue feature becomes critical, as now I cannot navigate through the site except in preview mode, so reaching it must be possible through a keyboard shortcut. |

On switching from edit to preview and back My favorite key would be Shift+Return. It's an easy-to-press, easy-to-remember key combination without the semantic burden of the ESC key, which works on every keyboard. I see the power of the ESC key ("just hit the key in the upper left corner"), but it's so often used to hit "cancel" on a dialog or abort an ongoing operation, that I'm convinced we shouldn't use it for switching from edit to preview and vice versa. Alternatives to Shift+Return could be Shift+TAB, Shift+[key next to shift] (this is depending on the layout, however) or the key next to "1" (one key down from ESC; but that's again depending on the keyboard layout). I'd love to eventually put this type of control keys on the numeric keypad, even if this would not be available for laptop users, but I'd like to develop an actual scheme for this first, which includes other often used operations as well. |

I think the semantics of the ESC key are exactly why it fits for this operation. You escape from the review mode. The main issue is that it needs to be a key that is easy to find/remember even for casual users, as you need it constantly when working on a page. Combinations that require to look at the keyboard won't be very helpful (and hard to remember). I still think that ESC is the best idea here. |
