The path to the node is saved in the Store workspace with ? (question mark) signs instead of the correct characters. After having hunted down the bug following several wrong paths, I finally found out where the problem is.
In class openwfe.org.engine.impl.launch.SimpleXmlLauncher at line 429

 final InFlowWorkItem subwi = (InFlowWorkItem)wi.clone();

the call to clone() "messes up" (sorry for technicalities) the unicode characters in the attributes map which are eventually saved on the repository as ????.
