Unfortunately sorting is currently technically possible only for non-hierarchical views. Since it's hierarchical what do you want to use sorting for? Perhaps there's other way how we can solve use case you have.

Mostly, this is about finding links that have been set up.

With 350+ links under the www-en-intl node (all sorted in non-alphabetical order), it gets hard to figure out if a redirect has or hasn't been created.

but those that have not been created you can still see in unresolved links. and you can sort there by site to get them all grouped together if sorting by number of calls is not what you want. Is that not achieving the same job?

... but I don't want to find the 404s that haven't been handled. I want to find the 404s that have been handled (so we can test them) or to find a specific link when there's a problem.

so the flat sortable view of all links with targets set is what you are really after. Correct?

Or alternatively search bbox in which you can paste URI and get all links that point to it. No?

Either or both would work

It is not possible to implement sorting in tree views. Magnolia doesn't support such functionality. Sorting is only available in list views.
