 Description

Both Markdown and Textile have (i think) java implementations (parser/transformer) as well as js editors.
OTOH, we have our wiki rendering module which also provides some of this.

BBCode seems to me a little "hairy", and hard to maintain; i'd rather on an existing library, and something more modern (wiki rendering module might sooner or later move to markdown/textile as well)

There's an editor for Markdown with live-preview: http://wmd-editor.com , http://code.google.com/p/wmd/
(wonder how fun it was to match client- and server-side rendering)

Markdown also has some limitations, and StackOverflow, for example, works around them: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2008/06/three-markdown-gotcha/

Given the thousands of other issues we have open that are more highly requested, we won't be able to address this issue in the foreseeable future. Instead we will focus on issues with a higher impact, and more votes.
Thanks for taking the time to raise this issue. As you are no doubt aware this issue has been on our backlog for some time now with very little movement.
I'm going to close this to set expectations so the issue doesn't stay open for years with few updates. If the issue is still relevant please feel free to reopen it or create a new issue.
