tiff is indeed not supported out of the box by the javax.imageio package, but it's feasible thanks to its plugin architecture, using something like

It seems other vm support more formats, out of the box. MGNLIMG-18 provides a way of checking what formats are supported on the system.

Firefox can't display a tiff on a page. Thus we'd need to first convert it to jpeg, at least for displaying the crop page.
This might lead to also resize the larges images for the crop page?

See MGNLIMG-21 for tiff input support.

Saving as gif also requires an imageio plugin.
For the records : https://gif-plugin.dev.java.net/ . Could help, but not tested.

in short:

  • the basic issue can be solved by imageIO plugins
  • see linked issues
