After installation and restart, Magnolia is unusable - both author and public instance display login screen, but user is unable to log in, and there is following message in the log: ERROR info.magnolia.cms.security.SystemUserManager : Failed to login as anonymous user The situation is the same even without restart if magnolia.update.auto is set to true. |

SystemUserManager.getRequiredSystemUser() is likely the culprit. It needs to refresh and retry after getting ItemNotFoundException instead of failing immediately. |
