Does it now display an NPE or show en empty tree?

Updated the title, hopefully it is more clear now.
Just in case, here are few more details: the tree with the content is displayed. Existing site definition is not mandatory for website tree to be displayed. As long as template assigned to the content exists the tree and content with associated template can and should be shown.
