It an issue of HTML vs XHTML, browsers handle it differently..
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4244434/innerhtml-removing-closing-slash-from-image-tag

I changed the property /server/MIMEMapping/html/mime-type with application/xhtml+xml and then i have a closing slash for the images (on FF).

But after changing the mime type I got this error in adminCentral :S

XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: http://localhost:8080/euronics-webapp/.magnolia/pages/adminCentral.html
Line Number 92, Column 29:                if (opener &&  opener.MgnlAdminCentral && opener.MgnlAdminCentral.onOpenedInNewWindow) {
----------------------------^

So maybe it's not a solution to change the mime-type !!

Not closed image tag meets doctype specification for html. For workaround you can switch to html from xhtml in main template (Templating kit-Templates-templating-kit/templates/main.ftl).
Another option is to register xtml under mime-types. However when setting this most of the pages most important admincentral won't be valid and inaccessible so other modifications must be done to implement this solution.

Also this not an issue for 4.5 and higher where doctype is set to html5.
