 Description

The move dialog is the only solution for moving items that works consistently across all platforms and input methods. While it does cause a disruption in the user's flow by opening a dialog, it also has advantages, e.g. for the use case of moving items across large distances.

Still, we could quite easily add more value to the move dialog by offering these functions:

  • we should offer to copy instead of moving an item. This would be a cheap way to also get a duplicate and move action.
  • we should offer to rename the item while moving it. This is especially handy, if you find an item already exists at the target location.

This story thus captures all these improvements.

Next steps to improve "move"

As a next step after these changes, we'll add alternate, quicker ways to move items, but these will depend on the input method and device. The move dialog will (and will have to) remain available and attractive, especially also with the value added by this story.

Obsolete by existence of copy/paste actions.
