I don't think you should be duplicating any content in DAM ... there could be potentially TBs of images in there and you can never now if they were updated since. The only workable way is to use DAM Asset Provider to load images from WCS via DAM instead of directly, but imho it would be easier to rely on configuration for giving you needed url to the server for now.

So i reworked asset provider to get links to images directly from WCS. Other than that i also improved asset provider in a way that we will be able to get category/product (these i have implemented now) via DamTemplatingFunctions (damfn.getAsset('wcs', 'product:storeId:productId').

However there is an issue when trying to get variant for an external resource - variants rely on JCR API. This needs to be improved.
