There is a problem with component variants where the parent node becomes irretrievable. You can retrieve the parent from a normal component but not a component variant.
Please see my attached screenshots. The screenshots from 5.x show the expected result from the nodes and the parent . The screenshots from 6.1 do not. Notice how model.parent and model.parent.node are both blank.
This seems to be happening on 6.1 but not on 5.x .
