We're currently sorting nodes in the tree view alphabetically. That's also how it has been specified. However, I've been approached by Jan who showed me that this is actually NOT how it should work. In Magnolia 4.x, a customer/user may rearrange items e.g. in the page tree and this feature is actually very important. It is used to e.g. rearrange items in navigation menus and to structure the page tree in any way a customer wants.
So please make sure that trees are not automatically sorted in any way by default and that their elements can be rearranged to specify any manual order, if that makes sense for a particular tree. The latter thus should probably be a configuration option.
Note that sorting in trees actually does make sense. There's a separate issue (MGNLUI-106 - also linked to this issue), which describes how I believe this should work. The two issues actually do not contradict each other: this issue makes sure we fix the bug that items are sorted at all and is critical; MGNLUI-106 shows how sorting could be implemented in addition to that.
